One Easter Sunday

I found this really old pictures when I looked on facebook and asked the creepy all knowing search bar "Photos of me I would like." I was scrolling down all the photos, and these little gems came up and reminded me of a funny little story.
Easter 2008 my friend came over to my house and we decided to escape instead of stay at my lame family get-together. We decided to stop by Walgreens and wander around the deserted downtown San Francisco and take pictures. I think I might try to do something like this again sometime soon. Jesus, 2008 feels like/ is a lifetime ago isn't it?

22-Hr-Layover

After my amazing five months in Europe, it was finally time to go home. However, I had to get through a 38 hour journey before I arrived in my hometown of San Francisco. Now in case you didn't figure this out yourself, that is not a normal amount of time for a flight. That is because this journey wasn't a simple GVA-->SFO non-stop flight, but instead a Geneva-->Amsterdam-->Boston-->Minneapolis-->San Francisco adventure. Oh and did I mention that I had a 22 hour layover in Boston!?
Luckily, I have friends in Boston, including one of my best friends Rui who I hadn't seen for a year since we went abroad different semesters. So this ridiculously long flight home wasn't a complete pain in my butt, but was also a great opportunity for me to catch up with some friends.
But it wasn't only a good opportunity to catch up with friends, but also a nice little opportunity to celebrate being 21 in America. I had turned 21 in April and had a little weekend trip to London. However, turning 21 in Europe is kind of a underwhelming experience. To start off my legal American drinking career, we met up with our friend Nicole, who had also just come back from abroad, and headed over to Boston (Rui was staying in a MIT frat house in Cambridge).
After wandering around, we stumbled on this pretty nice bar with the prices to match the fancy ambiance. Unfortunately, Rui got this great idea to start chatting with these guys so they would buy us drinks. Even more unfortunately, these guys were not cute but rather old, creepy Arab men. So creepy in fact, that one of them asked me if I had ever been with an Arab man and if I would like to....Not particularly enjoying our conversation, I beelined for the bathroom and chatted with some girls as I pretended to fix my makeup.
After Nicole had come to the bathroom for similar escaping tactics, we decided to leave and took a cab back to Cambridge. There, we met up with some friends Nicole had made in Costa Rica. Quickly, we realized that we had actually crashed a birthday party of some 27-year-old chick....we were most definitely the youngest people there. Somehow, we made friends with some of the guests and we headed over to an 'after-party' at an apartment close by. Mind you, I had just come back from Europe that very day so it was 2am and I woke up at 7am Switzerland time--that was almost 24 hours earlier. And where was I? I was in an apartment in Cambridge with a group of 26-28 year old grad students as I sipped on a cocktail.

These are some pictures we took after we woke up at 7am (note the 5 hours of sleep) and got breakfast with our friend Suzie.  Harvard and MIT have the best campus housing, right by the river with amazing views. I can only imagine how much these buildings would go for if they weren't disgusting and covered with beer.
So that's what I did during my layover in Boston. I guess you could say those 22 hours were pretty eventful.

Why Is it Awkward Turtle not Awkward Giraffe?

Looking outside my window, it looks like a pretty nice day in old Geneva. Unfortunately, it's been raining all week and even this seemingly nice day is forecasted to rain for a bit. I'm still determined to go outside for a bit because tomorrow it is forecasted to SNOW. SNOW, it is almost the last week of May and it's going to SNOW. I thought it was bad when it snowed on April 17th in Hamilton, NY. Geneva, Switzerland apparently takes crazy weather to a whole new level. I blame global warming.
While I'm wasting away inside and procrastinating, I decided to post some pictures from one of the few days I got to hang out in the park in a cute skirt....which is one of the few dreams I had about my life abroad. Unfortunately, due to the weather and workload here, my park time has been limited. Hopefully, I'll be able to make up for it as I constantly sip Banana soy milkshakes from Hammie Whole Foods this summer on the town green. BYE PAYCHECK!

I bought this skirt from Topshop while I was in London for my burfday. I decided to splurge a bit since it was my 21st birthday and basically bought a whole new wardrobe that I just wear on constant repeat. I was torn between this skirt and a denim circle skirt, but this one had giraffes on it so I clearly had to choose this one.

I Like Your Hat

I am currently sitting on a bench on the academic quad of my campus killing some time before I have to head to my next 30 minute syllabus class. I've actually been back at Colgate for some time now because I decided to be a leader for a pre-orientation group for the freshman this year. It was pretty fun and I got to know some new people and some new freshmen (I actually bought my shelving off a freshman who thought they could fit that in Curtis HA). But despite having been here for a week, I'm still in denial that school is starting and that I won't see my friends from back home until Christmas.

My last night in San Francisco, I had some friends over for dinner and a sleepover. I'll blame that dinner for my current lapse in my diet because we just made a giant pot of pasta and eggplant. It was yummy and simple but definitely went against my no carb diet. OH WELL. After some normal chatting and eating, we went on an adventure to the drugstore to buy Ice Cream which we then casually destroyed.
This is the unnecessary outfit that I wore to this fun event. I had to wear it because I had stolen that hat from one of my friends and had yet to take advantage of it's amazingness. I've been eyeing a hat like this for about a year now, but have never actually bought one.
Although I'm obsessed with that and they make any outfit just 50x more glamourous, it just doesn't make sense to wear at school. I'd have to take it off in class (imagine sitting behind a chick wearing that), I'd take it off in my apartment or visiting anyone else, so basically I'd end up just holding this hat all day getting annoyed. And that's the reason I have not and probably will not buy that hat until I graduate and live in a city again. (how unnecessary was that rant). But now I'm in a hat state of mind, I'm going to include some hat pictures that I want but can never have as a form of torture for myself.

California One

Sorry I've been away recently. I started working with a personal trainer recently so I've been going to the gym more regularly which takes away from my blogging time when I'm not working. Working out has been a bit of a struggle. First of all, I have discovered that I'm extremely weak. Like disgustingly weak, so working with weights has been quite the struggle. Also, I have discovered a am completely out of shape and my fears about being fat have been confirmed. I am fatter, weaker, overall inferior to the "average" healthy person my trainer keeps comparing me to.
Besides working out, something else has been taking me away from my computer: driving. This summer my major summer goal was learning how to drive. I had gotten to an age where not knowing to drive wasn't just lazy, but simply embarrassing. Therefore, after and before work and the gym I would force my dad to go driving with me to get ready for my driving test. I think he enjoyed our time together, despite having to be in a car in an urban environment with a new driver. It probably was also the first quality time we had spent together for years now. Ultimately all that time paid off because I successfully got my license this past week! I took it in Daly City right across from Krispy Kreme (which is far superior to Dunkin Donuts to all of my East Coast readers). Unfortunately for me, because I am now working with my personal trainer, he put me on a no carb diet so despite having passed I couldn't celebrate with a donut. I told my brother that if I had failed I would have demanded a donut or five to make myself feel better. I'll discuss with you later my difficulties and struggles with this impossible diet.
These pictures were taken on one of my drives this week. We're practicing the freeway since we didn't cover that before we got my license. I think he was too scared to bring me on the freeway until I was licensed. We drove down tot half moon bay on the freeway and on highway 1, the beautiful and windy highway on the coast of CA. He was like freaking out because I was going kind of fast on Devils Slide. Whatever. We made it all the way there and it was beautiful. All I wanted to do is get my bathing suit out and play in the beach. Unfortunately, I had work in the afternoon so we headed back to the city. But I NEED to get back to the beach. Who wants to go with me??
Take a long drive with me
on California One, on California One.
And the road a-winding goes
from golden gate to roaring cliff-side,
and the light is softly low
as our hearts become sweetly untied
beneath the sun of California One.

Promoted Without a Raise

The last couple days at work, I've been in a pretty bad mood. I felt like I was failing at my job. I couldn't sell a single banana card (it's like a credit card for Banana Republic). But even more frustrating, no one wanted any help and if they did they never really bought anything! Grrrrr.
So at the end of my shift, one of my leaders said she wanted to "touch base." So after my crappy days, I was pretty sure that she was going to yell at me and tell me I suck at my job. Insteaaaaaaaddddd, she said that wanted me to join the Styling Team. She went onto tell me how I'd get my own designated changing rooms for my personal customers etc etc Basically it sounded like I got promoted and was given more responsibility and pressure, but for some odd reason there was no discussion about getting a raise. Like come on, give me at least another dollar an hour! But nonetheless, I am now a stylist for Banana Republic. And apparently, we're the only team of stylists in stores in the entire company.
Due to my new position, you might see some more polyvores highlighting Banana Republic clothing as a practice creating outfits for customers. I promise, we actually have some pretty cute clothes! I've been eyeing a whole lot of things this past week. Oh no! I forgot to extend the hold on my blue pants!
But this is what I wore to work during this whole ordeal. I was inspired by the advice I presented in my post for College Fashionista on stripes from J.Crew's fashion director, Gayle Spannus. Treat stripes like neutrals. Therefore, when I grabbed this skirt (it's one of my few skirts whose length is appropriate for work), I no longer felt obligated to grab a white top. Instead, I grabbed this old Michael Stars t-shirt from high school! I then added more to the outfit with my statement necklace from J.Crew, but unfortunately, I forgot my new green rose studs. They really added to the skirt...
So what do you guys think of my pattern mixture? Do you think it's worthy of J.Crew?

Cookies Rule Everything Around Me

Sometimes I feel like I just waste my summer. I just sit there on my bed watching yet another episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians or Law & Order while aimlessly and pointlessly surfing the internet. Now, it's even sadder for me to spend my free days this way because I only get 2 days off a week and then I'm back to talking older women into buying that soft soft, 100% cotton cardigan at Banana Republic. But this weekend, I was slightly more social. Hooray! I'll tell you what I did today and safe my yesterday activities for another post, so I can pretend like I am super social all the time.
Today, I went to Telegraph in Berkeley with my friend Camille. She was planning on going with some of her friends from high school and I just tagged along. Having grown up in San Francisco proper, I never really venture out to the suburbs or surrounding cities. I mean I live in the the city, and all these other places just surround it. But it was nice venturing out of my normal places and going to what we called the Haight street of Berkeley. I bought this really pretty mint green dress that I hopefully will do a post on very very soon. We went to a lot of different stores, but after my large $40 purchase, I tried very hard to not buy anything more. But we did get a bite to eat.
Yummy in my tummy!
There's this place called CREAM (Cookies Rule Everything Around Me). The idea is you get to choose two freshly baked cookies, an ice cream flavor and they make you a made-to-order chipwich! It was soooo yummy, and there were so many options that I just want to go back for more! And it was only $2, which is nowhere near the most I've paid for a dessert in the Bay Area. If for some reason I find myself on that side of the Bay Bridge again, I might have to get another.
After our chipwiches, we headed back to the city and hung out in Duboce Park. By this point in the day, my outfit had changed dramatically. But what we ended up with was a mostly borrowed outfit from my friend Camille (I had slept over the night before). The outfit is slightly mismatched, but I think it turned out alright? This is my first time wearing this necklace that I bought from Forever21. I was looking for a colorful, preferably somewhat green statement piece for my job. I ended up buying this necklace, which I liked but isn't exactly the best to create a professional look. Nonetheless, it's a nice piece to add some color to my drab outfits and for my days off. I'm also wearing my handy dandy army jacket from Wasteland that my friend Catherine has been trying to steal for ages. My skirt and tank top are both my friend Camille's.

I Hate Heels

I have nothing really big to share with all of you. I've been pretty tired lately because I just started my new job as "sales support" in Banana Republic. Yesterday, I worked from 8am-5pm mainly working at the cash register. The whole day, I felt like such a frosh. Everyone else who worked at the store knew each other and were making jokes all day, while me and my fellow newbs wandered around doe-eyed, confused and friendless (such a freshman move). During lunch, all the veterans were eating with their friends and we just sat at a newbie table. I'm sure it will get better soon with more practice on the job and after we spend more time with the other associates. At least I hope?
Fake high-low skirt!

So while I was looking through my closet for Banan Republic appropriate outfits, I ended up picking up an outfit that is not Banana Republic at all. I just bought this long maroon skirt from Forever 21. I like how this skirt has a slightly different cut with slits on the side. Also, it's super fun because I can easily create a high-low skirt without buying one! You can't even tell can you! Ok, you can but if I add a belt you wouldn't really be able to. The rest of my outfit is from a year ago *gasp*. My shirt is actually one of those tight short dresses that were so cool last year. That's a cropped leather jacket from H&M that I actually found via Late Afternoon. And my sandal heels are from Lucky Brand that I have never had the opportunity to show you guys!
I think I was pretty clever with this ;)

Last year, I felt like getting super high heels were the best way to get my style to the blogger level. Looking at bloggers like Aimee or Olivia Lopez, I felt so pressured to buy heels (especially super high heels like those Jeffrey Campbells that were so popular this past year). Ultimately, they looked so trendy and fashionable and I thought it was so much because of the heels. But I've discovered that although I did like these heels, heels of this height and heels in general are just not conducive for my lifestyle. Both at school and at home I live in hilly areas and cannot drive, so walking around in 6 in heels is a bit of a challenge. And that is why this year I'm looking for fun and fashionable shoes that are flat (or at the very worst 3 inches) and easy and comfortable to walk in. Sounds like a plan (and a future Daydreaming About Post)!

Business in the Front, Party in the Back

Dress: Forever 21, Denim Jacket: Forever 21, Sandals: Sam Edelman, Sunglasses: Wishbone
Recently, I've been trying to be more careful with my shopping choices. Essentially, that means that I'm broke as hell and can no longer afford to go shopping on a normal basis. Back in high school, that would not have been as big of a huge deal. I actually would go shopping after school multiple times a week, but I just wouldn't buy things that often.  For some reason, I can't really do that any more. I just find "window shopping" depressing these days. I guess it's the difference between choosing to not buy anything but always having that option if I really wanted something and just not having any choice. But I have had some weak moments in my past month or so back. The other day was one of those moments. I got lunch with my mom downtown and she couldn't give me a ride home, thinking I would just hang out downtown like I did so often before. After wandering into fancy stores like Diptych or YSL, I stupidly wandered into Forever 21 and bought a long chiffon skirt. Then I wandered down the street and stupidly wandered into the other Forever 21.
Actually, can we just take a short tangent on that? What is that? Why are there TWO three story Forever 21's within a block of each other in downtown San Francisco? First of all, I don't understand the point of this. Having the first one was enough for years, they definitely didn't need to get a new bigger building. And that's what I thought it was going to be, the new Forever 21. But they didn't move, they just opened a new one and never closed the other. So you might be reading this wondering why I'm complaining. Two giant Forever 21's sounds awesome, right? More options, more clothing, etc etc. But that's just the problem. The two stores have different stuff! I have to go to both. So after I bought my goods at Forever 21-1, I went to Forever 21-2 and ended up kicking myself because I found things I liked better. It's just inconvenient to have all your options located a block away from each other.
So this dress is the item I bought my second round at Forever 21. I had yet to buy a high-low skirt or mullet skirt, whatever you call it. I'd seen the trend for some time now. I must admit, when I saw it at LF and Brandy Melville a while ago, I thought it was pretty stupid. But then I saw one pretty fashion forward girl at my school wearing one with a slouchy sweater and fell in love. She looked so chic and trendy! Unfortunately, I was not willing to drop too much money on this trend and haven't had the chance to properly go shopping at my cheap spots (aka Forever 21) for some time now. So when I found this dress with a pattern I really liked, in a material that looked quality and was only $17.95 I was so excited. So excited in fact, that I bought something from Forever 21 for the second time in an hour.
But today, when I was walking around with my new mullet dress, I felt strange. Although my knees were chilly, my skirt was clinging onto the back of my calf. It was just a weird and awkward sensation. I'm sure I'll get over it with time, but I'm not quite sure how worth it it is. Although back back in the day, the girl I spotted at school was super trendy wearing that skirt, that is no longer the case. The mullet skirt is so common this season that it's nothing special. And even more, this cut is just a trend. So next year, I wouldn't even be able to wear that skirt because it would be so last year.
Therefore, I've decided that although I do like this dress, I probably won't buy any more mullet skirts or dresses any time soon. Instead, when I want a long skirt, I'll just buy a long skirt and vice versa. I just feel like these timeless cuts will be better choices in the long run (long run meaning 6 month time span). However, I have to say that I think a mullet dress would be really cool in a gown form. I mean, the mullet back is essentially a small train right? What are your opinions on this trend? Love it? Hate It? Hate me for not loving it?
Also, I wore this outfit to go driving with my dad! I'm totally getting the hang of it. Aren't you all proud of me for working on #15 of my Summer To Do List?

Let's Be Frank about Let's Be Frank

Outfit--Tank: American Apparel, Jacket: Crossroads, Shorts: Zara
Last week was a beautiful week in San Francisco. Unfortunately for me, I was writing that paper for the extended program I was on in NYC. I was convinced that that week was going to be the one gorgeous week of real summer San Francisco. (In case you didn't know San Francisco's summers are not the warmest things in the world. Remember the Mark Twain quote: the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco). Thankfully, this wasn't the case. Because the wonderful weather continued all the way until...yesterday.
BUT before the fog rolled back in, I managed to get in a trip to Crissy Field with my friend Rebecca. We walked from the marina to the warming hut, passing by all the amazingly cute little doggies on the way! When we reached the warming hut, we got a bite from Let's Be Frank, a fancy hot dog cart. The hot dog was $6 on some acme bread (one of the favorite bakeries in the city). Although I really wanted to be in love with this hot dog, it essentially tasted just like a $1.99 hot dog from Costco. Only that one comes with a drink and Let's Be Frank's sodas cost $3.
Me eating a $6 hot dog from Let's Be Frank
This experience made me question the foodie culture of San Francisco. I'll admit, I'm absolutely in love with the food in SF and miss it so much during the school year when I'm trapped in the cuisine of college cafeterias and upstate new york. However, sometimes the snobby level in San Francisco restaurants is a little too high. Like come on, essentially $10 for a soda and hot dog? That's ridiculous!
Despite the fact that Let's Be Frank raped my wallet, I still really enjoyed my trip to Crissy Field. It was a beautiful sunny day and the view from the beach was beautiful. I also got to take some pictures of people's outfits for my internship with College Fashionista. I'll link them to my page when they go live! But I'm sure you were also wondering what I was wearing.
Me and my friend Rebecca! Look at how gorgeous the day is!
I was wearing a new chiffon orange shirt from American Apparel that I bought from the Warehouse store in NYC for $11! I paired that with a tribal jacket/cover thing that I bought from Crossroads during winter break. I was uncertain about whether I should buy this item at the time. The print was a little adventurous for me at the time. However, I've grown to love this jacket-cover up-thing. I've also grown to love tribal print. In fact, I even wrote an article about it for my last post with College Fashionista #shamelessplug So if you have anytime, you should check out my posts on College Fashionista. Did You Know Guru is Sanskrit?

Outfit--Chambray Shirt: AA, Skirt: Marc Jacobs, Flats: H&M
I just finished up my extended study in NYC. If you didn't know, I was basically being a giant nerd for 3 weeks because I voluntarily signed up to take classes for an additional 3 weeks after summer started. COOL. But it was actually pretty fun. We got to talk to reps from different UN Missions throughout NYC. One of the most interesting things was seeing which missions would be the most hospitable (aka where'd we'd get the most free food). Now we saw the likes of the US, UK, France, Russia, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, South Korea, etc. Where oh where was the best to visit? IRAN AND IRAQ OF COURSE! We got free pastries from both. Iran gave posters and  I <3 Iran cards, Iraq had a gorgeous building on the Upper East Side. Ultimately, what I learned was that visiting officials from rogue states is way too much fun! Axis of Evil more like Axis of yummy pastries. I now regret not having the opportunity to see the free swag from North Korea. But all jokes aside, it was a wonderful and enriching experience. So after my 3 weeks in Manhattan I am thoroughly nerded out, my bank accounts are empty, and I have a 10 page paper to write. YIPEEE!
Here are some completely unrelated outfit pictures. I had to take a picture of myself on campus for my new internship with CollegeFashionista. Now I must admit that the word "intern" for this position is a little generous. I'm really just writing a weekly article on a street style picture I take and giving "STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK." For our first article, we had to provide a "Style Guru Bio". If you like, you should check it out out HERE! Throughout the summer, I'll probably put little links to my weekly articles so WATCH OUT!

So back to the outfit, cuz I'm lookin supa cuuuuute! I know you've been staring at my beautifully patterned green skirt since you opened this blog entry. Where oh where did I get it? Well, if you must know it's actually Marc Jacobs circa 2005. It's practically vintage. I know, I'm like totally cool. But actually this skirt is my bat mitzvah skirt from 7th grade. I still remember spotting the skirt and its matching dress that I actually had my eye on from the escalator while I was shopping. This was the first time I had heard of Marc Jacobs and obviously my first of many Marc Jacobs purchases. I have to admit, that I miss this style of Marc Jacobs. His stuff is not really my style anymore, but I will always hold this skirt dear to my heart. I'm also pretty happy that I didn't choose the dress because there is no way my ass would be able to fit into the same dress as my 13 year old self. I gave the skirt a preppy vibe with a chambray shirt from American Apparel. The only problem with this outfit is that my shirt always like rises out of it and makes me look fat. I wish there was some way to keep shirts perfectly tucked in your high rise skirts. Anyone else agree? Ok, I'm off to write my paper. JOKES! I'm off to watch Pretty Little Liars and then get lunch for my big bro's 30th bday (haha he's so old).

Halfway Done and Not Happy About It

Outfit--Leotard: American Apparel, Tank: Alternative Apparel, Shorts: Zara, Shoes: Keds, Necklace: LF

Today is May 21st and I've been out of school for about two weeks now, I believe. I'm lying to you slightly here because I'm actually still in school and taking classes but no longer on my campus--which is really what I consider being in school. I'm currently writing to you from a tiny little room in NYC, where I'm doing an extended study program with my university. However, this post isn't about my time in NYC but about reminiscing on the last weeks of school. Unlike every other overworked and stressed out Colgate student (except maybe seniors), I was not ready for the school year to end. I had been having so much fun during the last couple weeks (example: Spring Party Weekend) and was not looking forward to junior year when some of my best friends are going abroad opposite semesters as me. That's the strange thing about junior year, it seems. Going abroad is going to be such an amazing experience (I'm going to Geneva in the Spring if anyone else is there!), but it also means I won't get to see some amazing people until August 2012 (the most highly anticipated yet slightly dreaded and scary day that starts our senior year).
The very last day of classes, after all of our papers were done and we only had our finals ahead of us (once again I lie to you. I actually still had a 15 page french paper due after this weekend, but officially all our work was supposed to be done) there was small celebration in memory of a member of the class of 2012 who had passed. It was a really nice day, maybe a little sticky and humid, but the festivities were a welcome break. There was an A Cappella performance, jumpy house thing, and food. It was also nice to see people wearing some sundresses and their normal preppy pastel shorts after wearing yoga pants or sweatpants exclusively for the past week.
I stupidly decided to look into my "I never wear this stuff" drawer, and noticed my lace leotard I used to be obsessed with. I really still like the look of it, but honestly it's just so difficult to pee in that I could never wear it out and it doesn't always seem appropriate to wear it to class. Upon putting it on, I realized that I was obese and quickly put on the first shirt I could find. I actually liked the combo so that's how my outfit came about! Great story, I know. I however will not tell it again. So I'm wearing a lace leotard and a nude leotard (yes 2 leotards on a hot, sticky day wasn't my brightest idea), a grey alternative apparel tank, zara shorts, and my keds (wowwww, I was wearing sneakers? weird).
As usual, the next week during finals week was wonderful and sunny. I tried my best to work outside as much as possible to soak in some vitamin D, but it's kind of a struggle to study so seriously outside. I swear that there is some conspiracy between the weather gods and my finals schedule, because it's always been amazing weather exclusively for the weekend before finals since my first final in 7th grade. That just can't be a coincidence. Anyone else agree?
two arms!

Definitely not the prettiest picture I could've taken on my campus, but here's Taylor Lake!
